The Sydney siege came to an end early this morning.
The gunman, now identified as Man Haron Monis, held up 17 hostages for 17 hours within the Lindt cafe in Martin Place.
The building was stormed by heavily armed police just after 2am in response to rapid gunfire heard within the cafe.
Police have confirmed that three people were killed, including the gunman.
It is understood the Lindt cafe manager, Tori Johnson, 34, was killed while attempting to take the gunman’s weapon. Mr Johnson’s actions allowed other hostages to flee and he is being praised as a hero.
The second hostage killed has been identified as Katrina Dawson, 38. The mother-of-three was tragically killed while trying to protect her pregnant friend.
Four others were injured and have been taken to hospital. – The Newsroom
