Sonny Bill Williams has been ruled out for six to nine months after partially rupturing his Achilles’ tendon during a 14-12 loss to Japan.
The All Blacks superstar was stretchered off after injuring himself in a tackle mid-way through the game.
Williams will now miss the rest of the Olympics campaign and also the Rugby Championships later this month. His replacement into the side is 23-year-old utility back Sione Molia.
The Kiwis gained retribution after they defeated Kenya 28-5 later in the day. Fellow team-mate Joe Webber also sustained an injury that has ruled him out for the rest of the tournament.
“It’s devastating for Sonny to lose him so early in the tournament, and Joe Webber, both influential players as well,” New Zealand coach Gordon Tietjens said.
“Sonny Bill’s a great professional, he’s very infectious, he certainly helps the younger players and has a great work ethic.”
