Who would have thought that another Rocky movie, made nine years later, would turn out to flow so well with the previous films?
The Rocky series started in the 1970s, and has grossed millions of dollars since. Creed, the newest edition to the series, follows Adonis Creed, the son of Rocky Balboa’s late friend and rival, Apollo. Rocky Balboa features as Adonis’ trainer and mentor.
Director Ryan Coogler did an immaculate job continuing the Rocky Balboa films’ legacy using an original idea. Most fans might have assumed the next film would be about Rocky’s son, but by making Adonis Creed the angle, it made the film more interesting and gave insight into the history of the Creed’s legacy.
Sylvester Stallone got in touch with his Rocky Balboa roots and showcased his passion for the character that has encapsulated his career. He immersed himself in the character and delivered yet another brilliant performance.
Michael B. Jordan gave a knockout performance as Adonis Creed, the best performance of his career. He delivered the same mannerisms and brilliance as Carl Weathers did as the character of Apollo Creed. Jordan gave the emotion and intensity that his character deserved in an amazing way, allowing the audience to delve into Adonis’ life.
This is the second film Coogler has directed, and he certainly did not disappoint. Coogler’s first first big-time film was Fruitvale Station, which also starred Jordan as lead. Coogler directed Creed in such a way that Adonis shined, allowing Balboa to fade into the background, making the film different from the rest of the series.
Although it was refreshing the film wasn’t just about Rocky, it was still a very predictable movie. It had the typical underdog story line that featured in all the the previous Rocky films; it became quite apparent in the early stages of the film. Most people in the audience might have guessed who Adonis’ opponent would be in the big climatic fight at the end of the film, they might have also thought “we have seen this millions of times before, bring us something different”.
Overall, Creed is definitely a film that should be seen by every Rocky fan as it is a brilliant continuation of the series, which is certainly getting stronger.
