Today, Pyrmont’s Union Square is throwing a street party for the public.
Pyrmont Village is hosting its first street “Market Day” with live music and entertainment until 8pm tonight. Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore said the council chose a Friday to target the 20,000 workers and 50,000 students that pass through the Pyrmont-Ultimo area each weekday.
She hopes it will give local retailers a boost in the lead-up to Christmas and has urged shop owners to take their businesses outside and make the most of the opportunity.
“Whether it’s setting out a trestle table or putting on some market day specials, your efforts will be a major contributor to this event’s success,” she told them.
The event is a pop-up market of stalls and street displays and includes styling booths including one run by hair-stylist Cabelo Culture.
Headlining act Rai Thistlethwayte – better known as “Thirsty Merc” – will perform at 12pm and 5pm, alongside other acts such as Lily So & Co, Bridie King and local singer/songwriter Alison Avron, who will perform songs from her next EP.
Market Day is organised by the City of Sydney and supported by Pyrmont Ultimo Chamber of Commerce as part of its annual Shop Local campaign in October and November. – Venus Landero
