As temperatures soared, police warned that arsonists will be shown no mercy.
The mercury hit the high 30s today and a total fire ban was in place across all of Metropolitan Sydney.
“Police have eyes and ears literally everywhere because anyone is really happy to come forward and report that sort of inappropriate criminal behaviour to the police,” Assistant Police Commissioner Mark Murdoch said.
“We will get you and you will spend up to 25 years in jail for your trouble.”
The 39C blazing heat combined with the 50km/h winds have prompted police to take pre-emptive action.
