Lions win but Hayne shines
The Detroit Lions beat the San Francisco 49ers 32-17 in Detroit. Jarryd Hayne, returning to the NFL after two months without a game, made 47 yards combined in a career-best performance at running back and punt returner. Hayne made nine carries as a running back for 27 yards – better than his previous six appearances companied. Hayne made no errors after training hard in the practice squad for two months. The Lions led for the entire match (20-17 at half-time) while the 49ers struggled in the last two quarters. Lions quarterback Mathew Stafford caused most damage, throwing a remarkable 29 completions out of 37 attempts for two touchdowns and 301 passing yards. Even though his team lost, It was a great result for Hayne, who has no intention of quitting the NFL. Earlier this month he told the Sacramento Bee: “To come this far in seven months, give me 12, 14 (and) it’s going to be completely different.”
Redskins win NFC East Title
The Washington Redskins secured the NFC east title for the first time since 2012 by defeating the Philadelphia Eagles 38-24 in Philadelphia. Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins threw a career high 365 yards, four touchdowns and completed 31 passes off 46 attempts. Jordan Reed scored two touchdowns off Cousins while Chris Thompson and Pierre Garcon also went over the chalk. Despite being on the losing sideend Eagles quarterback Sam Bradford threw a mammoth 380 yards off 37 completed passes.
The Streak is over
The Atlanta Falcons have ended the Carolina Panthers’ 14-game winning streak in Atlanta, 20-13 (7-7 at half-time). Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan shaded star player Cam Newton by throwing a touchdown and 306 yards off 23 completions. The Falcons’ wide-receiver, Julio Jones, was the star of the show, running 70 metres to score his eighth touchdown of the season. It was a decisive turnaround by the Falcons, who suffered a humiliating 38-0 loss to the Panthers in round 14. – Jesse Mullens
