The Central Coast Mariners has sacked midfielder Troy Hearfield (above, right) after he failed a drug test, major media outlets claimed yesterday. The club confirmed that Hearfield had left, saying his contract was terminated by mutual agreement two months ago.
In a statement released through Football Australia this afternoon, the Mariners said Hearfield had asked the club in February to release him from his contract.
The 25-year-old former Olyroo reportedly fronted a tribunal two weeks ago and is now awaiting a ruling on his future in the game. If found guilty he would be only the second player to fail a drug test since the A-League was established in 2005, and faces a ban of up to five years. – Blake Moretti
