Mia Freedman, founder of the popular online publication Mamamia, has been hit with a wave of criticism overnight after making controversial comments about homosexuals and pedophiles.
Ms Freedman was a part of a panel on The Project, discussing if rehabilitation was an affective form of treatment for pedophiles, with host Josh Zepps questioning whether naming and shaming pedophiles was the best method. Mr Zepps cited Canadian research which suggested young people with paedophilic tendencies were much less likely to commit offences if they were able to seek treatment without fear of being revealed to society.
Ms Freedman then joined in the discussion. “We accept that gay people can’t change who they love and who they’re sexually attracted to, so why do we think that people who are sexually attracted to children can be rehabilitated?” said the media figure.
The comments caused uproar on Twitter , with the homosexual community taking to social media.
Ms Freedman responded to the criticism of her comments with a series of apologetic tweets, “Mortified that I may have caused offence to some in the gay community who misunderstood my clumsily worded point in chat on @theprojecttv.” – Louis Dillon
