After not appearing in an NFL match since October, Jarryd Hayne is expected to make his return to the San Francisco 49ers tomorrow.
Hayne was demoted to the practice squad after making costly mistakes in his first six matches. His prospects looked bleak after coach Jim Tomsula said he needed to learn how to play football. Another blow came when the 49ers signed another running back as their injuries list grew, sugggesting they did not consider Hayne’s return to the squad a viable option.

On Christmas day Tomsula told a press conference that Hayne was “getting better, but we’re going to see where everybody is and we’ll let you know from there”.
Overnight he was returned to the 53-man squad for the game. The final roster of 46 players will not be announced until shortly before the match.
The 49ers season has been lacklustre and the club is languishing at the bottom of the table. They take on the Detroit Lions tomorrow. If Hayne plays, it will give him a chance to impress two coaches – the Lions were the other team bidding for his services early on. – Jesse Mullens
