Protesters denounce lack of Bangladesh factory safety
Thousands of Bangladeshi workers took to the streets of Dhaka in protest today after an eight-story building collapsed, killed 250 people, mainly women. The demonstrators, shouting “Hang them!”, demanded the arrest of the owners of the building. Shoddy building standards are alleged to have caused Bangladesh’s worst industrial accident.
More than 2000 people have been pulled alive from the wreckage of the Rana Plaza building in Savar, northwest of Dhaka, a police spokesman said. Survivors said the building developed visible cracks on Tuesday evening, but factory bosses had demanded staff return to the production lines despite a police evacuation order.
Chile arrests four over ritual baby burning
Chilean police arrested four members of a cult over the alleged ritual incineration of a live baby in small town near Valparaiso port in November. The leader of the sect reportedly believed the end of the world was near and the child was the antichrist.
Associated Press reported the baby’s 25-year-old mother had approved the sacrifice and was among those arrested. “They strapped tape around [the baby’s] mouth to keep her from screaming… after calling on the spirits they threw her on the bonfire alive,” a police spokesman said.

Aussie named top sports photographer
Australian Adam Pretty has been named sport photographer of the year at the Sony World Photography Awards in London. The Tokyo-based photographer won the award for a portfolio of black and white shots taken at the London Olympics last year. Mr Pretty said being stationed mainly at the aquatics centre during the Games had forced him to think outside the box. He covered iconic moments of the Games, including Usain Bolt’s win in the 100m sprint.
