Business magnate Donald Trump revealed on Tuesday he is entering the US presidential race, vying for the Republican nomination.
“We need somebody that literally will take this country and make it great again. We can do that,” Trump announced to a crowd of supporters in New York. “So ladies and gentlemen, I am officially running for president of the United States.” Trump’s anthem of choice when he walked into Trump Tower, Neil Young’s iconic Rockin’ in the Free World, was a peculiar choice considering the 1989 song’s condemnation of the Bush administration’s apathy towards the poor.
Former Egyptian president sentenced to hanging
An Egyptian court has upheld the death sentence of former president Mohammed Morsi on Tuesday. The decision came a month after the court issued a preliminary death sentence for Morsi and was confirmed after consultation by the Grand Mufti, Egypt’s highest religious figure. Morsi, Egypt’s first democratically elected president, was found guilty of helping to plot mass prison breaks and riots during an uprising in 2011.
Russia to expand nuclear arsenal
Russia will add 40 new intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) to its arsenal this year, President Vladimir Putin announced. Speaking at an arms show near Moscow, Putin declared the new ICBMs would be “able to overcome even the most technically advanced anti-missile defence systems”. The nuclear expansion comes amid worsening relations between Russia and the West over the former’s annexing of the Crimean Peninsula and the actions of pro-Russian rebels in eastern Ukraine.
Migrants forced from French-Italian border
Italian police have dragged African migrants away from the border it shares with France, where they had camped for several days. Migrants at the Ventimiglia border crossing were physically escorted to waiting buses after border police in France blocked their crossing. Some grabbed on to signposts in an attempt to resist being taken away, while others were carried by their arms and legs. Italy has used the incident to demonstrate the need for greater European cooperation on asylum seekers. Approximately 54,000 migrants have landed in Italy this year. – Compiled from internet sources by Sasha Godman and Jake Nelson
