The United Nations and the European Union have welcomed Russia’s announcement that it will hold an eight-hour ceasefire in the Syrian city of Aleppo.
The ceasefire will operate on Thursday from 8am to 4pm (local time). A Russian official said the pause will “mainly be for the free passage of civilians, evacuation of the sick and wounded and withdrawal of fighters”.
The UN has pleaded for 48-hour weekly ceasefires for humanitarian relief in Aleppo, where Russia and Syrian forces have intensified their aerial and ground assault in recent weeks. Both the UN and EU have said the ceasefire should be longer to allow the delivery of humanitarian aid.

UNESCO resolution condemns Israel on al-Aqsa mosque
UNESCO has condemned Israel for restricting Muslim access to the al-Aqsa Mosque (also known as the Temple Mount) in East Jerusalem. The resolution acknowledged Israel’s role as an occupying power, but Israel says it ignores Jewish ties to the site and has suspended cooperation with the UN agency.
