Taiwan’s deadly plane crash
At least 31 people have died after a TransAsia Airways plane crashed into a river in Taiwan shortly after take-off yesterday. The aircraft, carrying 58 passengers, was captured on video as it clipped its left wing on a bridge before crashing. Rescue officials said 15 survivors have been pulled from the wreckage and 12 passengers still unaccounted for. A crane has been used to lift the plane from the shallow river. Survivors reportedly moved to the riverbank by themselves or were carried to safety via rubber rafts.
Jordanian pilot’s father calls for revenge
The father of a Jordanian fighter pilot murdered by the Islamic State (IS) called for revenge on Wednesday against the extremist group. Muath al-Kasasbeh, 27, was reportedly burned alive in a cage. Hours after a video depicting the murder were posted online, Jordan responded by executing two prisoners: Sajida al-Rishawi, a suicide bomber IS had previously demanded to be released, and Ziad Karbouli, a previous assistant to the deceased leader of the Iraq branch of al-Qaeda, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.

The wife of a murdered Australian businessman broke down in court as prosecutors visually outlined how she plotted the death of her cheating husband. The body of 60-year-old Robert Kelvin Ellis was found dumped next to a rice field in Bali, after having his throat cut. His wife, Julaikah Noor Ellis, along with her two housemaids and three hit men are all facing charges for premeditated murder. The Denpasar District Court heard Mrs Ellis asked her maid’s partner to find people to “take care of Mr Bob”, whom she said robbed her financially and sexually.
