Gales have brought a church tower tumbling down in Melbourne’s inner west.
There was no divine intervention to save Christchurch Anglican Church, Newport.
Ferocious winds have battered Victoria in the past few days. The winds reached speeds of up to 140 km/h, the highest recorded in the Melbourne area in 30 years, causing extensive property damage across the state.
In Newport, the church on Mason Street, just outside the village was badly damaged.
The park bench beneath the tower was a mangled wreck. Its proximity to the village and the railway station makes it a popular resting spot for passers-by. Perhaps by the grace of God, no-one was sitting there at the time. – Report and photo by Illya McLellan
