The NSW Government first introduced lockout laws and last drink restrictions to areas of Sydney in 2014. Since then debate has raged about its value and purpose.
The strict legislation was implemented in response to a rise in alcohol-fuelled violence in the CBD and Kings Cross.
The topic has generated heated discussion among those in favour and against. Many see the measures as draconian, and don’t believe law-abiding citizens should have to sacrifice their freedom for a minority of people who do the wrong thing. Others welcome the new measures, and hope they will continue.
The Newsroom‘s special investigations team has explored the impact of the lockout laws on the culture and night-time economy of the city. It also looks at why Melbourne, only an hour’s flight away, doesn’t seem to be grappling with the same issues.
The video project asks whether our lawmakers are looking at the real issues and whether Australia has a culture of binge drinking and anti-social behavior – and if it a problem that can be solved.
The Star Casino’s role cannot be ignored, and poses even more questions. This project asks whether the public believes their safety is the real motive behind the restrictions, or did the NSW Government play into Star’s hand?
