Earlier this week Bill Shorten rejected the marriage equality plebiscite by blocking the legislation in the House of Representatives.
The Labor leader is now pushing Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull to “get on with it” and allow parliament a free vote.
“Let’s get on with marriage equality, let’s have a free vote in parliament and do the job that the people elected us to do,” Mr Shorten told the ABC earlier today.
Mr Shorten has taken to the streets and spoken to health professionals as well as LGBTIQA community members about the potential mental health effects the campaigning could cause young gay and lesbian people.
The Liberal Party has no plans to allow parliament to have a free vote and many in the LGBTIQA community believe they will now have to wait for change until a new government is elected at the next federal election. – Story, picture and video by CJ Cowen, produced by Phil Logan.
