Green and Labor politicians in NSW and Western Australia have declared they will repeal new anti-protest laws that threaten harsh punishment for protesters.
Laws passed in both states in the past year have significantly increased the fines protestors face – and pose the threat of long jail terms – to people attempting to obstruct mining and forestry projects. The laws also increase police powers to disrupt protest gatherings, to confiscate property, execute search warrants and arrest people on suspicion of planning obstructive protest.
The Newsroom canvassed NSW reaction to the controversial law, passed by Mike Baird’s state Coalition government with the support of the Christian Democratic and the Shooters and Fishers parties. – Produced and presented by Nathan Davies
