Dutch midfielder Rafael van der Vaart has been ruled out of the 2014 FIFA World Cup after suffering a calf injury in training.
The former Tottenham and Real Madrid midfielder was set to play in his third World Cup, but in an official statement from the Royal Dutch Football Association, it was revealed that manager Louis van Gaal will not include the 31-year-old in his 23 man side.
Van der Vaart was the most experienced Dutch international named in the preliminary 30 man squad, with 109 caps after debuting against Andorra in 2001.
The Dutch international was in form this season for his Bundesliga club, Hamburger SV. The captain helped his side survive relegation in a play-off against Greuther Fürth.
