US Secretary of State John Kerry said ISIS has committed genocide in Syria and Iraq against Yazidis, Christians, and Shia Muslims.
Mr Kerry said the terrorist group was responsible for crimes against humanity, and has called for an independent international investigation to be carried out against those who are responsible.
“Daesh [ISIS] is genocidal by self-proclamation, by ideology and by actions, in what it says, what is believes and what it does,” Mr Kerry said, using an Arabic acronym to name the group.
“Naming these crimes is important, but what is essential is to stop them.”
Mr Kerry said the US state department was provided with well-documented accounts of ISIS attacks, including the abduction of tens of thousands of Yazidis who were left stranded on an exposed mountain before US were able to intervene.
“The fact is that Daesh kills Christians because they are Christians, Yazidis because they are Yazidis, Shia because they are Shia,” he said.
Although Washington’s senior diplomat said the US could confirm the nature of the crimes, he admitted that a lack of access to certain areas meant they do not have the “complete picture” of the atrocities.
