A 28-year-old US sailor on shore leave in Dubai for 24 hours took on and subdued a bus driver who tried to rape her.
The woman told investigators that the driver, a Pakistani national, offered her a ride while she was visiting the Hor Al Anz area. Instead of taking the normal route he drove to a deserted area in Sharjah, drew a knife and attempted to rape her.
The sailor kicked the knife out of his hand, breaking it in two, bit him, then put him in a stranglehold with her thighs. When he was subdued she fled the scene and reported the incident to her commander at Port Khalid.
The driver was arrested the next day and charged with attempted rape, threatening to kill and consuming alcohol (illegal in Dubai). When charged he admitted being drunk and said he could not remember what happened. The case has been adjourned until May 1. – Blake Moretti
