Oliver Curtis, husband of Sydney PR executive Roxy Jacenko, has been sentenced to two years’ jail for conspiracy to commit insider trading.
Jacenko tearfully embraced her husband before he was led away by corrective services officers. Curtis had shown little emotion from the dock throughout the morning’s proceedings at the NSW Supreme Court.
Curtis faced the possibility of a maximum five-year jail term and a $220,000 fine after being found guilty earlier this month of taking part in an insider trading scheme, which netted friend John Hartman $1.43 million in 2007.
Justice Lucy McCallum took just under one hour to hand down her judgement in front of a packed courtroom. She made it clear to the court that Curtis had shown no remorse for the crime.
“It’s troubling that Mr Curtis has not embraced responsibility for his offending,” Justice McCallum said.
“There needs to be a message to other young men and people in the business world not to ignore their moral and legal obligations in this area.”
The defence for Curtis had lodged a number of character references to the court during the trial, hoping to spare him a custodial sentence. This included a heartfelt letter from Jacenko, who said her husband was the primary carer for their two children aged four and two.
“If Oli were to be sent to jail our children will lose the close relationship they have with their father for a period of time. Given their ages I’m worried about the effect this will have on them,” Jacenko’s letter read.
Jacenko left the courtroom with her head bowed, making her way through a large media scrum accompanied by her private security, before leaving in an awaiting hire car. – Story by Luke Cullen and video by Macleay Digital Team
