Roads around Central station have reopened after police cordoned streets off this morning while they attempted to coax a woman off the Eddy Avenue light rail bridge.
Peak hour traffic was thrown into turmoil for three hours during the operation.
The Indigenous woman climbed out onto the bridge’s supporting pillar at about 8.30am, provoking a response involving scores of police from the rescue squad, the Motorcycle Response Team and negotiators who attempted to talk with her.
During the tense standoff, the woman stripped naked and continuously smashed her head against a metal pole. NSW Fire and Rescue enlisted a cherry picker to take her off the bridge, but the attempt failed when she climbed under the structure.
Witnesses said she was one of the homeless people who live in the vicinity of Central station area. It is not known what sparked the incident. – Story and photos by Noel Fisher
