Hawthorn star Buddy Franklin is set to move to the Sydney Swans.
This move comes days after winning his second premiership. His 9-year $10 million contract is unprecedented in AFL history.
The Swans have been criticised by GWS forward specialist coach Dermott Brereton for allegedly misusing their 9.8% cost of living allowance (COLA) funds, saying “(COLA) goes into fuelling champion players.”
Under salary cap rules, the Swans are given an extra 9.8% in their salary to cover the harbour city’s higher cost of living.
Herald Sun reporter Jon Ralph said on Fox Sports News: “This has already been a tinderbox, this cost of living story, and now Sydney have gone and poured petrol on it, and a hand grenade, and an atom bomb, it will explode in Melbourne.
“This is not what the cost of living allowance was for, this is farcical.”
Collingwood President Eddie McGuire was furious on Fox Footy saying: “Enough of this stuff, its left a really nasty taste in a lot of people’s mouths today, most of all I think for Hawthorn. Should we just blow the competition up and just go stealing everyone’s players?”
The AFL is reportedly launching an investigation into all matters of the extensive deal, in response Andrew Ireland said, “we have no qualms about it.” – Lyndon Hall
