The Skullcandy Oz Grom Open junior surfing competition has been cancelled after two shark attacks in less than 24 hours on the NSW north coast.
More than 270 junior surfers from around the world were expect to participate in one of Australia’s biggest junior competition.
Paramedics were called to the scene after a male surfer was reportedly not bitten but was knocked off his board at Lennox Head by a shark.
Ballina Shire Council mayor David Wright told Fairfax Media that the surfing competition was close to Friday’s attack.
“It’s south of where we are, but much closer than the one yesterday,” he said.
The attack comes just a day after a 32-year-old body boarder Matt Lee was mauled by a suspected Great White Shark at Ballina and remains in a critical condition at a Gold Coast Hospital after undergoing emergency surgery.
Mr Wright told Fairfax Media that all surfers were pulled out of the water and crews were investigating the attack.
