American tennis ace Serena Williams has overtaken Maria Sharapova as the world’s highest-paid sportswoman.
Forbes magazine has released its list of highest-paid athletes for 2016, with Williams topping Sharapova, who has held the title for the past 11 years.
The Russian star’s wealth suffered after doping allegations at the Australian Open earlier this year, causing her to lose sponsors including Tag Heuer and Porsche.
Williams leads the list with a reported $US28.9 million, ahead of Sharapova’s paltry $21.9 million. UFC fighter Ronda Rousey, Nascar driver Danica Patrick and fellow tennis player Agnieszka Radwanska round out the top five.
It is a consolation for Williams after her shock loss to Garbine Muguruza in the French Open final last weekend.
