A groin injury – wouldn’t that be a kick in the pants?
Young Australian snowboarder Scotty James made his second run after taking a terrible tumble in his first run at the Olympic qualifiers. James was seen clutching his sides and it was revealed that his injury was much more personal.
“I was really embarrassed, I actually hurt my ‘man parts’ real bad and I was in a lot of pain, and I didn’t really know where to put my hands,” he said.
James later tweeted about the event saying: “Ouch! My nuts caught the rough end of the stick on that slam on my first run. Bring on Semi Finals on Saturday. Your mine triple corky flip!”
These personal injuries are common with males in sports like football and cycling, and have even been made comical in cartoon shows. See attached picture.
Groin injuries could be the most inconvenient an athlete could face, but James isn’t the only one.
Former wrestler, John Levi Miller, filed a lawsuit in early 2012 against his former wrestling promoter after losing his right testicle as a result of an injury during a match. Still in pain the next day, Miller went to hospital and had to have his testicle removed.
The Newsroom sports reporter Lyndon Hall has also suffered the painful experience.
“I was riding a bike and I hit a car and my groin hit the handlebar,” he said. “I was in hospital. It was bruised and it was not good.”
While James didn’t automatically qualify for the final due to the injury, his second run has given him the opportunity to compete in the semi finals.
Let’s just hope he controls his equipment more carefully on Saturday. – Noah La’ulu
