South African Paralympian Oscar Pistorius last night denied the premeditated murder of his model girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.
The 26 year old double amputee told a Pretoria bail hearing he did not intend to kill Steenkamp, but mistook her for a robber.
In an affidavit read to the court by his lawyer, Barry Roux, Pistorius said he felt “vulnerable” without his prosthetic legs when he fired bullets into the locked bathroom door.
“I believed that someone had entered my house. I was too scared to switch a light on. I grabbed my 9mm pistol from underneath my bed. On my way to the bathroom I screamed words to the effect for him/them to get out of the house and for Reeva to phone the police. It was pitch dark in the bedroom and I thought Reeva was in bed,” said Pistorius.
Prosecutor Gerrie Nel told the court that the murder was intentional, alleging that Pistorius took the time to put on his legs and walk to the bathroom door before opening fire.
“There is no possible explanation to support his report that it was a burglar” he said. “Why would a burglar lock himself inside a bathroom?”
Magistrate Desmond Nair had earlier ruled Pistorius should face a charge of premeditated murder and the harshest bail requirements available to South African law. Pistorius is fighting for a lesser charge and the right to bail. The hearing resumes tonight AEST.
