Carolina secure spot in playoffs
The Carolina Panthers demolished the Atlanta Falcons 38-0 to win their 13th consecutive game. Panthers quarterback Cam Newton was instrumental for his team, completing 15 of 21 passes for 265 yards. Newton threw three touchdowns, two of which were scored by Ted Ginn Jr. The Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan was sacked five times and his team turned the ball over four times. Ryan nevertheless completed 22 of 34 passes for 224 yards.
Raiders upset the Broncos
The Oakland raiders narrowly defeated the Denver Broncos 15-12 in Denver. The teams were locked at 12 apiece at the break but the Raiders scored a touchdown and a field goal to secure the victory. Raiders quarterback Derek Carr threw two touchdowns and completed 12 passes for 135 yards. The Raiders have now not beaten the Broncos since 2011. Despite the loss Brock Osweiler, who is filling in for superstar Peyton Manning, threw 308 yards off 35 completions.
Rams too good for the Lions
The St Louis Rams ended their five-game losing streak, defeating the Detroit Lions 21-14 in St Louis. At half-time it was 7-0 with Rams rookie running-back Todd Gurley the star of the show. The 21-year-old ran two touchdowns and ran 140 rushing yards off 16 carries. The Lions’ wide-receiver Golden Tate scored two touchdowns but Trumaine Johnson’s 58-yard intercept put the icing on the cake for the Rams in the second stanza.
Jacksonville make half-century
The Jacksonville Jaguars recorded their biggest win of the season, defeating the Indianapolis Colts 51-16. It wasa massive turnaround for the Jaguars: at half-time the Colts were in front by 13-9. Then Jacksonville scored 42 points to three thanks to an amazing performance by their quarterback Blake Bortles who threw three touchdowns off 250 yards. The Jaguars managed to crack the 16-game winning streak of the Colts in the AFC south division. Until then, the Colts have not lost a match in the AFC south division since 2012. – Jesse Mullens
