Prince Charles and wife Camilla met with thousands of fans in Sydney’s CBD earlier this afternoon.
The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall shook hands with Sydneysiders in Martin Place as office workers watched from the surrounding high-rise buildings. Their final event today will be a dinner hosted by Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove at Admiralty House. The royal couple arrived in Australia yesterday at 10:30am, landing in Canberra. Their stop-over in Sydney is the second part of a 12-day tour of Australia and New Zealand, from November 4 to 15.
Family of teen rape victim curse the worst day of their lives
The parents of a 14-year-old gang-rape victim have described the incident as “the worst day of their lives”, and thanked the community for their support. In a short statement released yesterday, the family wrote, “Our family has suffered a deeply personal and horrific tragedy, which by its nature has been very public and overwhelming.” The Geelong girl was allegedly assaulted in two locations by four men, three of which were from the same family. The men, who range in age from 20 to 29, have been charged with abduction and rape.
Unemployment drops under new government
The unemployment rate has dropped to 5.9 per cent in the month of October, with 58,600 jobs created, according to ABC Finance Reporter Alicia Barry. She attributed the fall in unemployment to “more confidence under new Minister Malcolm Turnbull”. Ms Barry expected more jobs to be created throughout the month of November. She also claimed this was good news for retailers leading into Christmas, with polls indicating Australian’s have greater confidence in their ability to spend.
Indigenous prisoner dies five days after attempting suicide
An Aboriginal man has died in a Western Australia hospital five days after he attempted to take his own life at Casaurina prison, 35km south of Perth. Bevan Stanley Cameron was found in his cell on October 28 at Casaurina prison and was taken to Fiona Stanley hospital where he underwent surgery, but later died in hospital on November 2. Mr Cameron’s death was the fourth indigenous inmate to have died by hanging at the prison since March 2013: twenty year-old Jayden Stafford Bennell died on March 6, 2013, followed by Aubrey Wallam, 31, on October 22, 2014, and Mervyn Bell, 28, on September 8, 2015. Marc Newhouse from the Death in Custody Watch Committee said it is “completely unacceptable” that Aboriginals are still dying in Western Australia prisons.
Controversial coal mine to emit more than New York City
Coal from the controversial Adani Carmichael mine will emit 20 per cent more emissions than New York City, according to a new report from The Australian Institute. The data reveals the mine will emit an average of 79 million tonnes of carbon equivalent (CO2-e) every year. The report found that the proposed mine’s emissions will even surpass that of some countries, including: Switzerland, Austria, Sri Lanka, and Malaysia who has a much larger population.
