Michelle Payne is hoping to inspire young girls to realise their dreams after becoming the first female jockey to win the Melbourne Cup.
The 30-year-old, who raced on outside chance Prince of Penzance, said after yesterday’s race: “I put in all the effort I could. Everyone else can get stuffed because they think women aren’t strong enough, but we just beat the world.” Prince of Penzance was considered a write-off in the race, with odds at $101 before the race began and is now the equal longest-priced winner in history of the Cup.
Peter Dutton meets 12,000 refugees
Immigration Minister Peter Dutton has flown to Jordan to meet the first 12,000 refugees who are due to resettle in Australia within the next 18 months. During a ceremony, Mr Dutton handed the first four families their visas. “We are very pleased that we will be able to welcome your family and we look forward to you starting your new life in Australia,” he said. Families included Sunni Muslims who had fled war-torn Syria, as well as Christians who had escaped persecution in Iraq. Mr Dutton has said that he hopes the families will arrive before Christmas of this year.
Robin Williams’ widow speaks for the first time
Susan Williams has told People Magazine that depression was not the only reason for her husband’s suicide, with Lewy Body Dementia (LBD), a progressive brain disease, a contributing factor. Robin Williams’ wife said the disease began the previous year but worsened during the last few months of his life. “It wasn’t depression that killed him. Depression was one of let’s call it 50 symptoms, and it was a small one,” she said. LBD can cause hallucinations, impairment of motor function, and is the second most common neurodegenerative disease behind Alzheimer’s Disease. Robin, 63, died in August last year.
Woman found “bound and gagged” in Sydney’s west
A woman was found unconscious at Glenmore Park in Sydney’s west at 2am this morning. Neighbours reported that they overheard police say she was “bound and gagged”, yet the series of events leading up to the incident are still unknown. Police have also confirmed that the woman was found on her kitchen floor, and are reporting that it was a “very traumatic experience”. The 33-year-old unnamed woman has been taken to Nepean Hospital.
Body found in charity bin
A man’s body has been found in a charity clothing bin in Sydney’s South at 5am today. A passer-by found the man at Dalmeny Avenue in Rosebery. Police believe the cause of death could be due to misadventure, athough foul play hasn’t been ruled out.
