
Cardinal George Pell has submitted his resignation to Pope Francis, but it may not be the end of his career.
All cardinals are obliged to resign at the age of 75, according to protocols introduced by the Pope in 2014.
The Pope, however, can choose not to accept the resignation. In Australia, many have called for Cardinal Pell to leave his post after revelations he knew of child abuse complaints wile he was a priest in Ballarat.
Fentanyl drug overdoses cause fatalities in Sydney
A lethal batch of heroin has caused 13 deaths in Sydney over the past month. However, experts believe that the heroin alone is not responsible for the fatalities, suggesting the drug may have been mixed with the painkiller Fentanyl. Michael Barnes, the State Coroner, has issued a warning to the general public about the dangers of experimenting with drugs. A report by The National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre has also stated there has been an increase of heroin-related deaths in the last year.
Police investigate stabbing of teen boy in South-West NSW
A 16-year-old boy has died after being stabbed multiple times overnight in South-West NSW. Police have arrested a man who allegedly stole a car soon after the attack, less than a kilometre from the crime scene. The man is assisting the police with the investigation.
Storm in Sydney’s north leaves damaged homes
The damage to seafront homes in Sydney’s north has been assessed by coastal engineers and drones after they were hit by king tides during Sydney’s storm. More than 3000 sand bags have been laid to protect the areas affected by tidal erosion. Residents have evacuated the area and are questioning why no action was taken to ensure the protection of their homes. A 20-year-old American student is still missing in waters off Bondi Beach after diving into the surf during the storm on Monday. —Vivien Wickham and Madeleine Wilson
