The father-in-law of Mexico’s most wanted drug lord has been arrested and charged with attempting to smuggle drugs across the US border.
Ines Coronel Barreras was detained with five alleged accomplices in Agua Prieta, near the Arizona border. Police seized two vehicles, five firearms and 255kg of marijuana during the arrest.
It is alleged that the 45-year-old is a member of the Sinaloa drug cartel led by Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman.
The US Treasury Department has labelled Coronel a “key operative” of the Sinaloa drug cartel, barring any US citizen from doing business with him and freezing all assets he holds in the United States.
Guzman has been in hiding since he escaped from a Mexican maximum security prison in 2001. The US has offered a $US5 million reward for information leading to his arrest. Forbes magazine estimates the drug lord is “worth” $1 billion and Chicago has named him its first public enemy number one since Al Capone. – Blake Moretti
