Queensland legend Kevin Walters was today named successor to Mal Meninga as coach of the Queensland Maroons.
Though he has never been head coach in first grade, Walters has plenty of experience at Origin level. He played 20 games for the Maroons, and has been Meninga’s understudy for five seasons as Queensland’s assistant coach.
Walters said in an press conference that he couldn’t be happier about the appointment, despite having not been the Queensland board’s first pick for the job.Cowboys coach Paul Green was approached first but pulled out of negotiations after doubts were raised about whether he could continue his club role while coaching the Maroons.
“I was here in Suncorp Stadium for the very first Origin game way back in 1980 [as a 12-year-old]. I fulfilled my dreams as a player and now I am fortunate enough to fulfil my dream as a coach,” Walters said proudly. – Jesse Mullens
