The fight that needs no introduction was over in less than two rounds.
Holly Holm, undefeated (10-0), has done the unprecedented and dethroned bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey with a vicious head-kick knockout in the headlining event at UFC 193 in Melbourne.
The electricity at Etihad stadium was created by the record 70,000 plus fans. Rousey, however, did not mirror this as she completely dismissed Holm, refusing to touch gloves and insulting the former boxer.
Holly ‘The Preacher’s Daughter’ Holm was aggressive from the get-go, surprising Rousey with multiple left hooks. Rousey did manage to hurt Holm with a hook, but Holm took the chance to take Rousey down.
It was the first loss of Rousey’s UFC career; the 28-year-old from the USA owned her last four opponents, with quick wins over competitors like Sara McMann in 66 seconds and Cat Zingano in 14 seconds.
In the second round, Rousey dove in with a sense of arrogance only to be trapped with some counter punches by Holm’s unimaginably fast striking.
Holm proved her athleticism and successful career as a professional boxer when she KOd Rousey with the head kick. Holm continued to throw punches until the referee stopped the fight. She then pranced around the ring with a smile on her face as Rousey lay beaten.
Holly Holm, with only 9 knockouts in her 33 career wins, has caused the most shocking defeat in MMA history. As an option almost no one considered, she has taken out a rival who has been dubbed the world’s most dominant athlete.
Rousey has reportedly been transported to hospital with an unknown injury, which is not surprising with the amount of hits she took and the blood that began soon into round 1.
UFC has also won here. The massive shock result draws in those who may not have been interested in UFC before, with Holm putting on a stunning show both in technique and dramatic ability. A huge money rematch could be an option for the pair, potentially at UFC 200 in July next year. – Bonnie Baker
