A routine traffic stop yesterday has left a police officer in hospital, a driver on the run, and traffic delays for up to two and a half hours.
The incident occurred yesterday at around 1:20pm outside the Melba tunnel, city bound on EastLink, when a vehicle was detected with stolen number plates. It was later sighted in the eastern suburb of Kew at around 1:30pm.
The car stopped as instructed, but as the senior constable approached, the driver executed a get-away, striking him down in the process. During the incident, the police member fired one shot from his handgun. The incident caused road closures while police investigated.
Victoria Police media unit supervisor Cath Allen spoke to The Newsroom regarding the closures.
“EastLink was closed yesterday for a short time in both directions regarding the incident. The Melba side tunnel where the incident occurred was re opened at 4:15pm.”
Ms Allen also commented on the condition of the officer who received minor injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment.
“The police member was discharged from hospital last night,” she said.
Detectives are appealing for public assistance to locate the car that has been described as a dark coloured Ford Falcon XR6 sedan, registration 1EJ-6PE.
