A first half hat-trick to Tim Cahill has earned Australia a 4-0 victory over Bangladesh in their World Cup qualifiers in Dhaka overnight.
All of Cahill’s goals and another to captain Mile Jedinak came in the first half to put the result beyond doubt early. Bangladesh found it difficult to come back in the second half as the Socceroos did not relent. However they were unable to add to the scoreline.
The victory put Australia on top of their qualifying group after past leaders Jordan were defeated 1-0 to Kyrgyzstan.
Socceroos Coach Ange Postecoglou was all praise despite the heavy security that surrounded the pitch.
“We came here to win the game. It was difficult conditions for us tonight,” Postecoglou said after the match.
“In the first half it was good but the second half we were a little scrappy. In the end I was happy with the performance with the players, three points for us and with it we go home.” – Jesse Mullens
