What a difference a year makes…
The new trimester has dawned and, I’m not going to lie, it’s been full on. Six weeks of sleep-ins, late lunches and ocean swims have done their job and I’m feeling relaxed and energised for the year ahead. I knew coming into my third and final trimester at Macleay College that I had 13 long and stress-filled weeks ahead of me. But I was excited! I longed to be back among my peers studying the industry that I admire, learning from inspiring journalists, writing, recording, filming, editing, combing Twitter and news sites for breaking stories and all the other fun and glamour (ha-ha) that comes with learning at Macleay.
This year could not have begun more differently than the last for me.
I was working a call centre job, earning minimum wage and feeling very unfulfilled professionally. I wanted to change that. I knew that if I didn’t, I’d end up in an asylum, rocking back and forth reciting Sylvia Plath’s poetry. I needed to do something I loved. Enter Macleay College’s journalism diploma. The course so far has been one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done. I’ve never been happier.
At Macleay, I’m surrounded by people who are pursuing something that excites and motivates them. My colleagues are smart, talented, passionate people who are enthusiastic and determined to succeed in the media industry. We’re a mixed bunch, with different interests, styles and quirks. But we all share a common goal; we want to do what we love. And with Valentine’s Day right around the corner, what better message is there to embrace?
So, without further ado, I’d love to introduce the team running The Newsroom in Trimester 1, 2014! We have a few familiar faces returning after doing an outstanding job last year…
Benedicte Earl returns as News and World editor after a very successful stint as editor. She loves scuba diving and hopes to one day become a foreign correspondent.
Our Features editor Zachary Pittas returns for a well-deserved second term in the role, and continues on his way to becoming a magazine feature writer. Zachary loves journal writing, something he’s done every day for the past six years!
Noah La’ulu is our new and enthusiastic Sports editor. He loves keeping up with all the NRL action, and aspires to be the Bronco’s media manager one day.
Alana Scott, our Social Media editor, returns to the post after making a big impact last trimester. She loves garlic bread and becoming a travel writer or presenter is her goal.
Callum Birch is The Newsroom’s new Multimedia editor and he loves surfing – so much so that he wants to be media manager for the Association of Surfing Professionals.
Our Production editor this trimester is Kimberley Braddish. She’s also a surfer and loves chocolate brownies. She hopes to jump straight into sport reporting after finishing at Macleay.
It’s not only our editors who work hard… The Newsroom wouldn’t work if it weren’t for a team of dedicated and talented writers who will work damn hard to bring you the news of the day. We’ve already got some great things in the works for the coming weeks, so stay tuned.
We’ll be seeing you… – Sacha Barbour
