Popular Fairfax columnist Sam de Brito has died at age 46.
The journalist and author was found dead in his North Bondi home this morning in what police say are not suspicious circumstances.
In a statement, his family have asked for privacy as they await the coroner’s report.
“Sam, 46, has revelled in parenthood and was a wonderful and devoted father to his young daughter, Anoushka,” the statement said. “He will also be remembered as a loving son, brother, nephew, uncle, cousin and friend, as well as a distinguished columnist and author.”
Tributes to de Brito have flooded in on Twitter, with media figures such as Mia Freedman and Ben Fordham mourning his passing.
The best job Sam de Brito ever had, by his own reckoning, was being a dad. Go well, Sam. My heart breaks for your family & beloved daughter.

RIP @SamdeBrito An extremely talented writer, complex character and a bit of a rebel. Thoughts with his friends and love to his family.

Over the course of his twenty-year career, Sam de Brito became known for his books including No Tattoos Before You’re Thirty and Hello Darkness, and his regular All Men are Liars column in Fairfax newspapers.
“For a man whose trademark was All Men are Liars, he was one of the most emotionally honest columnists this country has had,” wrote former Sydney Morning Herald opinion editor Helen Pitt.
Sydney Morning Herald and Sun-Herald editor-in-chief Darren Goodsir has also offered his condolences. “With his authentic views, and raw, colourful take on life, [de Brito] attracted a large online audience, drawn to his forthright commentary,” Mr Goodsir said. “He was certainly not one for political correctness, and had very broad interests – being equally able to match cheek and controversy with empathy.”
Sam de Brito’s final column, on parents sharing their beds with their children, was published in Sunday’s editions of the Sun-Herald and Sunday Age.
