Carlton star Chris Judd will not play in the season’s opening games.
The premiership midfielder is set to undergo surgery on his Achilles to correct tendonitis problems.
The injury plagued him throughout pre-season, and is a blow to Carlton’s early hopes of achieving a top-four position at season’s end.
Judd won’t be available for the Blues until their round-three clash with Essendon.
Carlton’s signing of Dale Thomas from Collingwood should cover their midfield depth while Judd sits on the sidelines.
It has been suggested that this will be the 30-year-old premiership players’ final season. His contract extension with the club runs until the end of this season. –Lyndon Hall
