Standout track: Losing You
Best known for being the younger sister of 16-time Grammy winner, Beyoncé Knowles, Solange has stepped out of her sister’s shadow to release her first EP – True.
She is accompanied by long-time collaborator turned producer Dev Hynes, an accomplished artist known for his work under the monikers Blood Orange and Lightspeed Champion.
Although she bears a striking resemblance to her older sister, Solange’s musical style has a more alternative edge. Lead single Losing You is a dreamy, indie pop number that gives off a distinct ’80s “summer in New York City” vibe.
Solange pays homage to her soulful R&B roots in Lovers in the Parking Lot. Her effortless vocals, combined with the down-tempo beats siphoning through, make this track an absolute winner.
The remaining five tracks, Some Things Never Seem to Fucking Work, Locked in Closets, Don’t Turn Me Down, Look Good with Trouble and Bad Girls are all solid, without being memorable enough to stick in my head.
Overall, True is a decent first effort from Solange, and doubles as a taster of what’s to come from her 2013 album release (details yet to be released).
Her name may not be up in lights like her sister’s, but the bulbs are definitely starting to flicker. — Lewis Collins
